Shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, Grand Island Fire Co. rescue personnel responded to a report of a pedestrian hit by a motor vehicle on Stony Point Road between Whitehaven Road and Independence Lane.

Assistant Fire Chief Chris Soluri stated that 62-year-old Stephen Turner of Grand Island was reportedly crossing the roadway after leaving his parked car and walked in front of a vehicle driven by 23-year-old Joshua Khreis, also of Grand Island. Khreis was traveling southbound on Stony Point Road in his 2003 Audi A4.

According to the Erie County Sheriff's Office, Turner had gone to his vehicle, parked along the southbound lane, to get some belongings. After getting his belongings, from his vehicle, he stepped into the southbound travel lane, upon which time he was struck.

Turner was thrown approximately 60 feet by the force of the impact and sustained extensive traumatic injuries. He was treated by GIFC medics, stabilized, and transported by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center for followup medical attention. Khreis was evaluated at the scene, but denied injuries.

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports the Erie County Sheriff's Office Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.

All GIFC units returned to service by 9:42 p.m. when the roadway was reopened to normal traffic.
