Village of Lewiston Recreation January, February activities

The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department announces the following activities of interest taking place in the months of January and February. All programs are held in the Village of Lewiston Red Brick Municipal Building, North Fourth and Onondaga streets.

•Oil painting classes for youths ages 8 to 14 continue Tuesdays, Jan. 24 and 31, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Instructor is Scott Pedley. Classes include instruction and critique on the basics of oil painting. All supplies are included; for fees and further information call 754-1990.

•Oil painting classes for adults are offered on Thursdays, Jan. 19 to March 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. Instructor is Pedley. Classes include instruction and critique on the basics of oil painting. All supplies are included and the course fee is $100. For further information, call 754-1990.

•An annual Recreation Department activity, the building of structures out of Popsicle sticks and glue guns takes place Monday through Thursday, Jan. 23 to 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. The activity is offered at no charge for adults and children. All materials are supplied and awards and trophies are presented. Children under age 7 need to have a parent accompany them. To pre-register, call 754-1990.

•January crafts, an activity where children ages 5 and up have fun making crafts to decorate their home his time of year, will be offered at no charge Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. Glue guns will used in this activity. Call 754-1990 to register.

•Valentine's Day card marking for children and adults will be offered at no charge Wednesday, Jan. 24, and Saturday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon. The activity is open to children age 7 and older without an accompanying parent, children age 4 and under attending with a parent, or any interested adult without children. The class and all materials are supplied at no charge. Class size is limited; call 754-1990 to register.

•"Have a Heart Craft Day," session one, for children age 5 and up, will be offered at no charge on Monday, Jan. 30, with times at 4 or 6 p.m. Children will make heart-related crafts. Glue guns will be used in this activity. Call 754-1990 to register.

•The movie "Smurfs" will be on screen at the Red Brick, Friday, Feb. 3, at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, courtesy of the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston. Popcorn and drinks are available at nominal prices.

•The Lewiston Recreation Department is looking for knitters to join in the making of afghans on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. The event is a community service activity using blocks of 12-inch-by-12-inch acrylic yarn to be fashioned into quilts for teens at Community Missions. Interested participants are requested to begin knitting and bring their blocks to the Red Brick for assembly. Lunch will be provided for participants. Also sought is a crotchetier to build borders for the finished lap robes. For further information, call 754-1990.

•Parents are welcome to stop by the Red Brick on Monday, Feb. 6, at 6 p.m. to participate in an iron-on beads workshop for children. Participants will make decorative items with fusible beads. This free activity is for children ages 5 and up. For more information, call 754-1990.

•The movie "Kung Fu Panda - The Kaboom of Doom" will be on screen at the Red Brick on Friday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, courtesy of the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston. Popcorn and drinks are available at nominal prices.

•Young ladies ages 5 to 9 are invited to "Princess for the Day," Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. Come dressed as a princess and learn the social graces, as well as make some crafts for your room. Tea and cookies will be served. Cost is $5 per child. Call 754-1990 to register.

•Oil painting classes for youths ages 8 to 14 will be offered Tuesdays, Feb. 28 to March 20, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Presented by instructor Pedley, objectives of the four-week course include instruction and critique on the basics of oil painting. Cost is $25; all supplies are included. For further information, call 754-1990.

•Children (in second grade or older) and adults can create leaded-glass window look-alikes at no charge on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. A second session may be held on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 4 p.m. Participants will use a non-toxic lead substitute and paint on Plexiglas.
