USCG Auxiliary 3-1 informs it will conduct a free vessel safety check at the Lewiston boat launch on Sunday, May 15, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

According to Stephen P. Bailey, division public affairs officer, the vessel safety check is a courtesy examination of your boat, personal watercraft, kayak, and canoe to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. No citations will be given; owners will be supplied with a copy of the evaluation.

"Vessels that pass will be given a VSC decal to display on your vessel," says Bailey. "The decal does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but will notify them that you have passed a VSC examination."

He reports that owners need not have their boat in the water to do a VSC, as the auxiliary will do the vessel safety checks on the top parking area across from The Silo Restaurant.

"Boating season has started in Western New York, make sure your boat, friends, and family are taken care of with having the proper safety equipment," says Bailey.

He adds that those with any questions regarding on the vessel safety checks can contact Bob York at 628-3133.
