The Grand Island Nature Alliance invites families to an event from 2-4 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Nike Base Community Center that celebrates the world of monarch butterflies and milkweed.
The event will feature fun activities, an educational talk, and hands-on experiences.
“We'll explore the fascinating lifecycle of monarchs and learn how crucial milkweed is for their survival. Discover the magical journey these beautiful insects undertake during their annual migration,” Michelle Lockett said.
A press release added, “Join us for an exciting event that celebrates the enchanting world of monarch butterflies and their favorite plant – milkweed! Get your child ready to dive into an afternoon filled with fun activities, an educational talk, and hands-on experiences.”
The main presenter will be Dave O'Donnell from Eastern Monarch Butterfly Farm.
“He has been entertaining families across Western New York for close to 25 years,” Lockett said. “He has a unique and fun way of teaching kids and adults about why it is important to pay attention to butterflies. After the talk, we invite you to go on a guided discovery walk to explore the Grand Island nature trails and search for butterflies, animal signs and other gems in the natural world. Please bring weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. Don't forget a reusable water bottle. There is a water bottle-refilling station in the Community Center.
“ ‘Monarchs & Milkweed’ is an event you won't want to miss. Join us for an afternoon of discovery and appreciation for these delicate creatures that grace our skies.”
