'Badges on the Border' international torch run to benefit Special Olympics NY

The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) will pass through Niagara County on Wednesday, Sept. 13, as the “Flame of Hope” makes its way around the state in support of Special Olympics New York. “Badges on the Border” will start at the Niagara Falls Discovery Center, travel down to Main Street and Rainbow Boulevard, to Fourth Street and Niagara Street.

Organizers stated, “Members from federal, state, county and local law enforcement will be represented as we end the torch run in the middle of the Rainbow Bridge. This year, Canadian law enforcement and Special Olympic athletes will join us in the middle as we light a cauldron symbolizing unity and inclusion between the two countries.”

A press release stated, “LETR is a time-honored Special Olympics tradition of more than 35 years, led and orchestrated by the ‘Guardians of the Flame,’ which include members of law enforcement personnel from agencies throughout New York. Together with local athletes and supporters, LETR representatives raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics New York.”

More than 75 members of local law enforcement and Special Olympics athletes are expected to participate. They will start running at 10:30 a.m., and are slated to be on the Rainbow Bridge at 11 a.m.
