Unique ECMC program beginning July 18, sponsored by ECMC Foundation, offers area high school students opportunity to participate in healthcare summer intern program

Sponsored by ECMC Foundation, ECMC is launching a new summer internship opportunity for high school students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades called “Healthcare Explorers.”

A press release explained, “This immersive summer internship experience allows students to have hands-on learning opportunities across the ECMC health campus. Students explore such health system areas as: ambulatory services, critical care, emergency services, hospital public safety, inpatient pharmacy, IT security, laboratory medicine, medical/surgical nursing, radiology, surgical services, and transplantation services. The students also have the opportunity to hear from members of the executive leadership team, including ECMC Corp.: President/CEO Thomas J. Quatroche Jr., Ph.D.; Chief Nursing Officer Charlene Ludlow, M.S., R.N., CIC; Chief Operating Officer Andrew L. Davis, MBA; Senior Vice President of Operations Cassandra Davis, M.S.; Senior Vice President, Surgical and Outpatient Services James Turner, B.S.N., R.N.; and ECMC Foundation Executive Director Susan M. Gonzalez.

ECMC noted, “This summer program is extremely competitive, typically with hundreds of applicants. For summer 2023, ECMC has accepted 87 students to participate in this 12-hour, two-day program, offered over four sessions between July 18 and Aug. 10. Those students accepted to be a ‘Healthcare Explorer’ work side-by-side with ECMC’s dedicated health care professionals to consider careers in the health care profession while gaining valuable networking opportunities and career advice, all while connecting with students across the Western New York Region. This resume-enhancing experience enables students to include this experience on college or job applications.”

The 87 summer 2023 student participants represent over 40 high schools in the counties of Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara and Wyoming.

To be eligible to participate in this program, students must have been enrolled in 10th, 11th or 12th grade as of fall 2023; completed an electronic application with supporting documents; provided one letter of recommendation from a current teacher, coach or principal; and included a two-minute video answering the question: “Why do you want to participate in this program?”.
