Niagara Falls City Council chairman to resign

Niagara Falls City Council Chairman John Spanbauer will resign from his position, effective May 22. Spanbauer notified his fellow councilmembers shortly before making a public announcement at Wednesday’s council meeting.

“As Niagara Falls City Council Chairman John Spanbauer prepares to step down from his seat on May 25, 2022, I would like to thank him for his service and dedication to our community,” Mayor Robert Restaino said. “A lifelong resident, he began his career in 1983 at the Niagara Falls YMCA as director of youth and director of program operations. He then moved on to Niagara University as an administrator in 1988, and also oversaw the recreation facilities and club sports program.”

Restaino continued, “He has also been awarded several honors for her service, including the Big Brother of the Year from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and the Vincentian Mission Award from Niagara University.”

Spanbauer first ran for his seat in 2019. The mayor said, “During his time on the council, he has worked tirelessly for the residents of Niagara Falls, always keeping their best interest at heart. His election as chair of the council this year is a testament to his leadership.

“I have known John for many, many years and he is a genuine, honest and caring person; his civility in government proceedings will be missed.

“It has been a pleasure working with Council Chairman Spanbauer. On behalf of my entire administration, I would like to wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
