For the first time in two years, the City of Niagara Falls plans to open its pools and splash pads to the public this summer. Leading up to the reopening, Mayor Robert Restaino is launching several major projects to get the facilities ready for visitors.

City pools and splash pads have been closed since 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In that time, his team said, “It’s become obvious that a number of costly repairs and updates would be necessary in order to allow residents to safely enjoy the facilities.”

In order to make those improvements possible, Restaino secured more than $1 million in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan, which will be used to repair liners in city pools and to make several mechanical updates to the facilities. In addition, Restaino plans to launch a complete redesign of the Center Avenue wading pool by converting it in to a splash pad.

“For the last two summers, our community has been unable to enjoy the city’s public pools and splash pads,” Restaino said. “These long-overdue upgrades and repairs will allow our community to finally have a safe, family-friendly place to enjoy our summer weather. I am proud to be able to use this federal funding to help improve the quality of life for everyone living in our city.”

The municipality is planning for pools and splash pads to be open from June 30 through Labor Day (Sept. 5).

Leading up to the opening, the city must fill a number of lifeguard and recreation aide positions. These jobs are open to all residents who are 16 years or older. Shifts are available Thursdays through Sundays. Lifeguard applicants must pay a $50 certification fee, which will be reimbursed upon completion of the course.

Those interested in applying for these positions can visit the city’s website, www.niagarafallsusa.org, to apply online. Applicants may also call 716-286-4430 or 716-286-4313.
