Another year of the Porter Cup has come and gone at the Niagara Falls Country Club. In the 61st edition of the prestigious tournament, Aiden Didone of Melbourne, Australia, walked away victorious.
Didone came from behind on Saturday to take over the lead from highly-ranked amateur Chun An Yu. The sixth ranked amateur in the world, Yu, held a three-stroke lead going into the final round Saturday.
Yu’s day started off tough with a double bogey on the first hole. Yu finished the round with a 4-over 74 in a tie for second place.
Didone, on Saturday, shot a two-under 33 on the front nine, and averted disaster by finishing with a one-over 36 on the back.
One of the toughest lies of the day for Didone came on the 11th hole. The champion’s approach went over the green and sat right up against a tree. Didone chipped out to the side and the ball settled on the cart path. Following relief, Didone chipped on the green and salvaged a bogey.
On the 17th hole, Yu and Didone were deadlocked at 9-under-par. Didone regained the lead, though, as he birdied and Yu pared the hole.
Didone finished the 18th hole with a par, as did Yu, to take home the 2019 Porter Cup.
The Aussie finished the four-day affair at 10-under (68, 68, 65 and 69) to secure the Porter Cup jug.
Yu (69, 63, 66, 74) and John Pak (69, 67, 69, 67) finished tied for second at 8-under.
