James Holzhauer, a 34-year-old professional sports gambler from Las Vegas, won his eighth game in a row on Monday and became No. 2 on the “Jeopardy!” all-time cash winnings list (regular games). His total winnings of $460,479 put him behind only Ken Jennings, whose historic 74-game winning streak yielded $2,520,700.

Dave Madden, who previously held the No. 2 spot behind Jennings, earned $430,400 over the course of 19 games; Holzhauer surpassed his total in only eight games. Holzhauer’s huge wagers on “Daily Doubles” facilitated his fast ascent to the upper echelons of the “Jeopardy!” record books.

“When I watch at home, I always root for the contestants to bet big on ‘Daily Doubles.’ They get them right most of the time, and it can give them a big leg up on the competition,” Holzhauer said. “I’m proud of myself for sticking to that attitude when it was my money on the line.”

Holzhauer will face two new challengers Tuesday, when he will attempt to win his ninth game.

The “Jeopardy!” 35th anniversary season premiered Sept. 10, 2018. With a weekly audience of 23 million viewers, it is the top-rated quiz show on television, and has received numerous awards and honors.
