The New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance has announced the election of Niagara County Community College instructor John Strong as the Executive Council secretary for 2019-20.

Strong is a health and physical education instructor, as well as the personal trainer certificate program at NCCC.

NYS AHPERD is a professional organization composed primarily of educators of health education, physical education, recreation and dance. The makeup of agency, community, worksite health professionals, youth coaches and future professionals in these areas collaborate to advocate for school and community programs related to health education, physical education, recreation and dance.

Strong has been a part of the organization since 2013, and routinely takes a group of future professionals in health, physical education and recreation from NCCC to the annual conference and expo in Verona.

“I feel a great deal of professional pride in working with this organization and it has led me to many additional and meaningful projects from SUNY youth sports, diversity and inclusiveness initiatives, advocacy, and inclusion in Every Student Succeeds Act funding.  Most recently, I’ve been a member of a small group of professionals tasked with updating the physical education state standards in Albany, ” said Strong.

In addition to his service on the AHPERD board, Strong has been awarded the E.B. Henderson Award from the Society of Health and Physical Education (SHAPE America), and received the Higher Education Teacher of the Year Award from the NYS AHPERD Western Zone.
