The Kenan Center presents the music of legendary trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker, performed by The Mark Filsinger Quintet, at the Taylor Theater on Saturday, March 24. This is the second of six programs in the popular "Jazz at The Taylor" concert series. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Taylor Theater, a 153-seat converted carriage house on the center's campus.
The concert features two full sets of music with refreshments available.
Trumpeter Filsinger will lead an all-star quintet featuring New York City-based alto saxophonist Bill Todd. The group will perform iconic jazz standards recorded by Baker during his 38-year career, including "I Fall In Love Too Easily," "Like Someone in Love" and "My Funny Valentine."
Filsinger is a staple of the local jazz scene. A performer, composer and educator, he is artistic director of the Buffalo Jazz Collective and assistant professor of music at SUNY Buffalo State. Early in his development, Filsinger studied Baker's repertoire and melodic approach to improvising. He models much of his style after Baker and said he looks forward to paying homage to one of his musical heroes.
According to jazz series producer Kathleen Rooney, the public is encouraged to purchase tickets early, as concerts have been selling-out in advance.
"We have been attracting audiences from all over the region," Kenan Center Executive Director Susan Przybyl said. "Our central location is convenient for fans from Erie, Niagara, Monroe, Orleans and Genesee counties. The response has been phenomenal."
Individual tickets are $15 for Kenan Center members or $20 for the general public, and may be purchased online at Ticketleap, in person at the Kenan Center business office (433 Locust St., Lockport), or charged by phone at 716-433-2617.
