Sat, Jan 27th 2018 07:00 am
Grand Island native Brett Kern of the Tennessee Titans is spending this week at his first-ever trip to the National Football League's Pro Bowl in Orlando.
The Grand Island High School graduate, a 10-year veteran in the NFL, led the league in punting average this season, kicking for a 49.7 average. He also led the league in net average (44.6 yard). The net average, which factors in the return yards and touchbacks, ranked second in NFL history, and the gross average ranked eighth all-time in the NFL.
Kern's 74-yard punt was the second longest this year. He had none blocked. He put 28 of his 75 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Kern's best game this season took place Oct. 18 at Miami, when he punted 10 times, with four boots over 60 yards, including one going 71 yards.
The Pro Bowl will take place Sunday, Jan. 28, at 3 p.m., airing on ESPN from Camping World Stadium, Orlando.
Kern was twice named first-team All-State while playing at Grand Island High School for the Vikings. He graduated in 2004 and played at the University of Toledo where he earned third team All-America honors. He was named the Mid-American Conference's Special Teams Player of the Year as a senior.
His parents, Cal and Sherri Kern, live on the Island, as do his grandparents, Ron and Nancy Wiese.
