Community service embedded in credit union's culture
The Summit Federal Credit Union is being honored with the 2017 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award, given to the credit union that best strengthens the structure of the communities it serves. Named for an American credit union pioneer, the award is presented by the New York Credit Union Association.
"This award means so much," said Cheryl Pohlman, The Summit's vice president of marketing and community relations. "It reflects the heart of what we believe - that, in order to fully serve our members, we must also serve the communities in which they live and work."
Approximately 40 percent of The Summit's members are from underserved areas.
The Summit actively supports approximately 150 organizations that strengthen communities in the Rochester, Central New York and Buffalo regions. Its continuing work with the City of Rochester Public Market, support of local breast cancer research through wine and chocolate festivals in Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo, and assistance with Causewave's "Every Minute In School Matters" initiative in Rochester, are among The Summit's efforts that demonstrate a dedication to the places in which it delivers services.
That sense of community responsibility is even exhibited in how The Summit's employees spend their time outside of work. In its 2016 annual report, The Summit pointed out that, in that year, its 230 employees volunteered 7,200 hours for more than 170 causes.
"I think The Summit both attracts employees who already engage in community service, and inspires employees to do more," Pohlman said. "The spirit of giving back is woven into who we are."
Founded in 1941, The Summit Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit, member-owned, full-service financial cooperative. With approximately $800 million in assets, The Summit has over 230 employees and provides a full range of financial products and services to approximately 80,000 active members in Central and Western New York.
