The gymnasium at St. Stephen School is reserved for the local/Council 4752 championship, the first level of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, on Saturday, Jan. 18. Registration, as well as free throw practice, begins at 12:30 p.m. and closes at 1:30 p.m. Competition begins promptly at 1:30 p.m.

Competition at this level, and in subsequent levels, is limited to boys and girls 10 to 14 years of age as of Jan. 1, 2014. The entrant, as well as parent or guardian, must sign the official entry form. Birth certificate/proof of age is required.

Each contestant gets three warm-up tosses and 15 official attempts from a specified free throw line, using a designated regulation-size basketball. The score of each entrant is tabulated and used to determine up to 10 winners, one boy and one girl in each age group. Ties are broken with successive rounds of five free throws per contestant. The winners move on to district competition, the second level, in February 2014.

Posters and some entry forms have been distributed to St. Stephen School and through the Grand Island Central School District Athletics Office. For additional information, call Peter Kuszczak, Council 4752 free throw chairman, at 716-773-6459.
