Fandango, the nation's leading moviegoer destination, announced today that it set a new record with "The Avengers" for the most tickets sold for any opening weekend in the company's 12-year history. On top of that, Fandango also set records for the largest percentage of tickets sold via mobile (42 percent of Sunday sales), as well as the top hourly sales record - selling as much as 68,000 tickets per hour during peak sales times (Friday, May 4, from 3 to 4 p.m. PT).

The previous record-holder was "The Hunger Games," which sold 60,000 tickets during a peak ticket-selling period. The company also saw its top-selling single day (May 4) for a movie, beating "The Hunger Games" opening day on March 23, 2012.

"Fandango continues to see millions of fans taking advantage of our many conveniences and innovations to guarantee their seats, particularly with movies in hot demand like 'The Avengers,'" said Rick Butler, executive vice president and general manager of Fandango. "Our record-setting mobile sales affirm that mobile has clearly transitioned from just an alternative way to buy tickets to a primary choice for many weekend moviegoers. As of Monday, the film is still going strong, with all signs pointing to staggering ticket sales in the weeks to come."

According to a Fandango online survey of thousands of moviegoers, 66 percent of "Avengers" fans plan to see the movie more than once in the theater, indicating repeat viewings throughout the week. As of Monday, the film still accounts for 94 percent of all daily tickets sold on Fandango.
