Blue Oyster Cult kick things into gear Tuesday

Another electrifying season of Western New York's favorite free outdoor concert series is finally here. The award-winning "First Niagara presents Tuesday in the Park" starts Tuesday, June 14, with heavy-metal pioneers Blue Oyster Cult taking the Amphitheater stage.

The evening's opening act is Son of the Sun.

All shows in the 12-week series begin at 6:30 p.m. and include free, hands-on art activities for children beginning at 5:30 p.m.

For nearly three decades, Blue Oyster Cult has been thrilling fans worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs such as "Burnin' for You" and "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." Formed in the vicinity of upstate New York's Stony Brook College under the watchful eye of famed music critic and manger Sandy Pearlman, Blue Oyster Cult became one of the pioneering bands in heavy metal music.

After a series of band name and lineup changes, Blue Oyster Cult made it big in the 1970's with the hit "Cities on Flame (With Rock N Roll)." The band released more than a dozen studio albums along with numerous live albums throughout its career. Most importantly, "Agents of Fortune" contained the Buck Dharma-penned hit single "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," which reached No. 12 on the Billboard charts. "Agents of Fortune" became the band's first of many gold records.

"Tuesday in the Park" is sponsored by Certo Brothers Distributing Company, Time Warner Cable, Sevenson Environmental Services, Frey Electric Construction Company, Modern Corporation, Mark Cerrone Inc., Tim Hortons Café & Bake Shoppe (Niagara Falls), John Hancock Life Insurance, Maid of the Mist Corporation, DiMino's Lewiston Tops, Pine Pharmacy, Compu-Mail, Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, Simon Construction, and Delta Sonic Car Wash, with support from Pepsi Bottling Group and Sahlen's.

Artpark's Outdoor Amphitheater opens to the public at 4 p.m. on event nights, and can be accessed via the upper park's Portage Road entrance off of Center Street or through South Fourth Street nearest the Mainstage Theater. Tailgating and carry-ins (food and beverages) are prohibited at all of Artpark's free concert events. On site parking is $10 for the lower lot (Fourth Street entrance) and $8 for the upper lot (Portage Road entrance).
