Talk about a song getting stuck in your head. How about a song getting stuck in your car’s cassette deck? It happened to Adam F. Goldberg, executive producer and creator of the ABC hit comedy “The Goldbergs.” He, of course, turned this into a storyline and will feature the song prominently in an all-new episode titled “The Pina Colada Song” on Wednesday, Jan. 16 (8 p.m.).

“When I was a kid, the cassette for ‘Pina Colada’ got stuck in the tape deck of my dad’s car, and for weeks had to listen to the song on what seemed like an endless loop,” Goldberg recalled. “We’d experience a range of emotions each car ride as the song would play, but it eventually would become a family sing-along. I must have heard the song about a 100 times until my dad finally broke down and got a new car radio. This is one of those very specific family stories I’ve always wanted to feature on the show and thrilled I finally get to do it.”

“The Goldbergs” is based on Adam’s experiences growing up in a Philadelphia-suburban family in the 1980s, and he will often insert recreations of his personal life into the show.

In “The Pina Colada Song” episode, the Goldbergs, en route to a Philadelphia 76ers basketball game, are stuck in rush-hour traffic on the Expressway in Philadelphia and are forced to listen to the song endlessly.

“Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” is a song written and recorded by British-born American singer Rupert Holmes for his album “Partners In Crime.” As the lead single for the album, the pop song was recommended by Billboard for radio broadcasters on Sept. 29, 1979, and then added to prominent U.S. radio playlists in October-November.

Rising in popularity, the song peaked at the end of December to become the last U.S. No. 1 song of the 1970s.
