As the fall season begins to come to a close, Niagara-Wheatfield athletics recently celebrated its fourth Niagara Frontier League title of the season.
The fourth was clinched by the girls swimming and diving team who won the league championship meet last Friday. The title is the team's fourth straight.
The Falcons scored 291 points, 70 points higher than runner up Lewiston-Porter. The victory also clinched a 14-0 season for the Falcons.
Danielle Carlson was an individual winner in the 200- and 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:59.21 and 54.24, respectively.
The relay team of Carlson, Maegan Mueller, Amaya Springer and Shannon Glor won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.50. Glor, Mueller, Carlson and Alyssa Hall also won the 400-yard freestyle relay to end the meet with a time of 3:50.47.
In other events, Sophia Patterson finished second in one-meter diving with a score of 360.50; Mueller finished second and third in the 200- and 100-yard freestyle, respectively; Glor finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle; and Hall finished third in the 500-yard freestyle.
Of the title-clinching win, coach Mike Corsaro said, "What's great about it is the fact that all the kids contribute to it. The kids were on JV for the first few championships and now are swimming varsity. This year was truly a team effort. Every kid contributed. Every swimmer/diver had a best time or score. It was nice to see all the happy kids enjoying the moment."
Next up, members of the team will compete in the Section VI Class A swimming finals at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo.
The girls volleyball team is looking to clinch its first Section VI title in program history. The Falcons start its playoff run at 6 p.m. Friday versus the winner of McKinley and Sweet Home - whom the Falcons defeated last Wednesday, 3-0. The team reached the finals last year, but was defeated by Williamsville East, 3-1.
This season, the team finished the regular season, according to MaxPreps, 18-0 with a set record of 53-0.
The boys volleyball team will head to the Section VI playoffs. The team's first round match is at 7 p.m. Friday at Hutch-Tech.
The girls soccer team recently defeated North Tonawanda, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the Section VI Class A playoffs. In the win, Abby Mason and Lindsay Hocking scored goals, while Mason and Briana Zayatz each added an assist. In net, Hannah Wilson made eight saves.
The team then defeated unbeaten Hamburg, 1-0, to advance to the Section VI Class A1 finals. The lone goal was scored by Madison Evarts. The team plays Williamsville East at 11 a.m. Saturday at Williamsville North High School.
The boys soccer team saw one of its best seasons in program history end last Wednesday after a quarterfinals loss to Grand Island. The Falcons lost 1-0 after a Vikings goal in the early minutes of the first half.
The team will graduate seven seniors, including: Jack Brauer, Alexis Leon, Ryan Mahoney, Tom Meuller, Max Shoemaker, Richard Torcasio and Kyle Weir.
