Multi-Platinum-selling MercyMe took part in Thursday's historic moment as the Orrin G. Hatch-Bob Goodlatte Music Modernization Act was signed into law.
"It's a history-making day for all of our fellow music creatives as the Music Modernization Act was signed," the band stated in a press release. "We were honored to bear witness to the signing of this game-changing legislation. We thank Congress and the president, but also the many songwriters, artists, composers, industry groups and more who united to safeguard music for years to come."
The U.S. Copyright Office stated, "This bipartisan and unanimously enacted legislation represents the realization of years of effort by a wide array of policymakers and stakeholders, as well as the U.S. Copyright Office itself, to update the music licensing landscape to better facilitate legal licensing of music by digital services."
It continues to be a landmark year for MercyMe. A major motion picture based on the life of frontman Bart Millard - who wrote the mega-hit song "I Can Only Imagine" after the loss of his father - opened at No. 3 at the box office on March 16. Carrying the same name, Millard's first memoir also released this year followed by the unveiling of "I Can Only Imagine - The Very Best Of MercyMe." MercyMe was recently named Top Christian Artist at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, was the top winner at the fan-fueled K-LOVE Fan Awards including a win for Artist of the Year, and just received their seventh AMA nod. The group is the current GMA Dove Award Winner for Artist Of The Year.
