Falcons Flashback: Girls swimming and diving start strong; football 2-0

Girls volleyball ranked No.2 in the state

This past week, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons fall athletic teams continued their ways. A couple teams also started up their seasons: the girls swimming and diving team, along with boys and girls cross country.
First, the girls swimming and diving team finished first at the 2018 Niagara Falls High School Sprint Invitational. Danielle Carlson picked up right where she left off last season, as the First Team All-Niagara Frontier League swimmer finished first in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:04.98; first in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 13.32; and first place in the 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:48.57, alongside partners Sarah Carlson, Shannon Glor and Maegen Mueller. Danielle, Sarah, Hannah Seiler and Abigail Potts finished third in the 200-yard medley relay. Additionally for the Falcons, Alyssa Hall finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.67; Amaya Springer and Seiler finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 50-yard fly; and Potts finished second in the 50-yard breaststroke.
The girls next meet is at 5 p.m. Friday versus Lewiston-Porter at home.
The boys and girls cross country teams started their season this past week at the Red Dragon Invitational at Bemus Point Golf Course. The boys finished in 17th place and were led by Aiden Tribbets who finished the 5,000-meter run in 19:03.50. The girls finished in 11th place and were led by Victoria Achtziger-Hughes who finished the run in 21:25.56. The two team's next meet is the Officials Invite at Beaver Island State Park Saturday.

The Falcons football team is now 2-0 for the first time since 2007. It defeated the Frontier Falcons, 19-0, last Saturday. Offensively for N-W, Jordan Parks and Chris Gordon combined to throw for 89 yards. Parks also led the rushing attack with eight carries for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Overall, the Falcons accumulated 305 total yards.
Defensively, Jake DeWolf led with eight tackles; Cody Giuliani and Griffin Cornwell each had six tackles; and Noah Bennett and Solomon added a sack apiece.
Next up for the Falcons is the Hamburg Bulldogs. Of the matchup, coach Russ Nixon said he wanted to "Just be prepared, be ready to execute our offense, defense (and) special teams. We know they got a big back; being able to account for him and making sure that we're prepared on our end."
The road matchup versus the Bulldogs is at 7 p.m. today.
The boys golf team stretched its win streak to 73 matches Tuesday. It defeated Kenmore West, 252-338. Anthony Delisanti medaled, shooting a 36, Adam Liberti shot a 37 and Nolan Codd fired a 41. The team played Niagara Falls as the Tribune was sent to press.
The girls tennis team has won four straight matches to begin its season. This past week, it defeated North Tonawanda, 4-1, and Niagara Falls, 5-0. Also, Wednesday, the girls defeated Kenmore West, 5-0. For a full season update on the Falcons tennis team, go to wnypapers.com.
After a very hot start to the season, the boys soccer team endured its first loss of the season at the hands of Lewiston-Porter, 3-1. The boys defeated Niagara Falls, 1-0, Saturday. Tom Mueller scored the lone goal in the victory, which was assisted by Jacob Vallas. In the defeat, Andrew Ramballi scored the Falcons' goal. Alexis Leon was given the assist. The team's next match is at 4:45 p.m. Friday versus Grand Island.
The girls soccer team is still unbeaten. Over the past week, the girls defeated Williamsville South, 4-0; Niagara Falls, 1-0; and Lewiston-Porter, 3-0. The goals came between two people - Erin Weir with five and Briana Zayatz with three. For a full update on the girls soccer team, go to wnypapers.com.
Boys varsity volleyball struggled versus Grand Island Monday night. The team was defeated 3-0 (25-6, 25-12, 25-7). The boys were defeated, 3-0, Wednesday night at the hands of Starpoint. The boys' next match is Friday at Kenmore East.
The girls volleyball team has made light work of their opponents to date. The girls defeated CSAT, 3-0, on Friday; Williamsville East, 2-0, on Saturday; Grand Island, 3-0, on Monday; and Lewiston-Porter, 3-0, Wednesday. The girls are now 7-0 overall (6-0 NFL) on the season, and, according to Maxpreps.com, are ranked No. 2 in New York. The girls are back in action at 6 p.m. Friday versus Kenmore East.
Lastly, from the Niagara-Wheatfield Athletic Department, Jordan Parks from the Falcons football team and Danielle Brochey from the girls volleyball team were named athletes of the week.
