It's been way too long, but Niagara-Wheatfield athletics are back up and running.
Some sports have gotten a head start on others, but, nonetheless, the schedules are out, and it's time for another fall edition of Niagara-Wheatfield sports.
Starting off with sports whose seasons have begun: the Niagara-Wheatfield golf team is still good. The reigning Niagara Frontier League champions Falcons started their season with a 261-305 win over North Tonawanda. In the win, sophomore Anthony Delisanti medaled shooting a 35, while Nolan Codd and RJ Delisanti shot 42 and 45, respectively. In the team's second match versus Lewiston-Porter, they were victorious, 264-287, as Anthony Delisanti medaled again, shooting a 37. In the Falcons' third match, they defeated Niagara Falls, 247-303. Codd medaled by shooting a 38 on a tough windy day at Hyde Park Municipal Golf Course. The Falcons defeated CSAT on Wednesday, with Delisanti medaling with a 38. The four wins extend the Falcons' match win streak up to 71. The boys' next match is Wednesday versus Kenmore East.
Also off to a 3-0 start is the N-W boys soccer team. The Falcons started off last Friday versus Sweet Home, and won, 3-0. Raphael Wence, Jacob Vallas and Alexis Leon scored in the win, while Wence, Kyle Weir and Joe Woroniecki chipped in assists. The Falcons came back the next day and defeated Williamsville South, 2-1. Vallas netted his second goal of the season, while Joe Timbello added another. On Tuesday, the Falcons defeated Lockport, 1-0. Vallas netted the game-winner in the 42nd minute, and Max Shoemaker made 14 saves in the crease. The boys' next matchup is at 4:45 p.m. today versus Kenmore West.
The girls soccer team has started the season 2-0. The Falcons defeated Newfane to begin the season, 2-1. Madison Evarts and Erin Weir did it all for N-W in the victory. Weir assisted Evarts goal to make it 1-0, then Evarts assisted Weir's game-winning goal to make it 2-1. In the team's NFL opener, they defeated Lockport, 5-0. Weir and Briana Zayatz added two goals and an assist, while Abby Mason added the fifth goal. The Falcons face off at 4:45 p.m. today at Kenmore West.
The girls tennis team also began their reign as defending NFL champions with a 5-0 victory over Grand Island. First singles player Nicole Guldin won in two sets (6-4, 6-4); second singles player MacKenzie Patterson won in two sets (6-2, 6-2); third singles player Kailie Malinowski won in two sets (6-3, 6-2); the first singles pair of Nikki Kwiatkowski and Jocelyn Fike won in two sets (6-1, 6-0); and the second doubles pair of Sydney Crangle and Katelyn Stojanovski won in two sets (6-0, 6-0). The girls' next match is at 4:15 today versus Lockport.
