It's been nearly 20 years since legendary comedic actor Rick Moranis last appeared onscreen when he starred in "Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves." He was a fixture of 1980s blockbuster movies and adored for his leading role in the "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" movies, "Strange Brew" and "Ghostbusters."
Moranis left on-screen acting in 1997 to focus on his family, occasionally voicing a Disney character over the years.
Thanks to ABC's hit comedy "The Goldbergs," Moranis is revisiting one of his most iconic characters, Dark Helmet, from the Mel Brooks comedy "Spaceballs."
Adam F. Goldberg, creator of ABC-TV's hit comedy "The Goldbergs," has been quite public about his love of Mel Brooks and Moranis' classic comedy roles that defined his childhood. Goldberg courted Moranis for several weeks to get him to say "Yes."
"I truly think Rick Moranis gave the most underrated and brilliant comedic performance in any '80s movie as Dark Helmet," Goldberg said. "I've been a lifelong fan of his work and became obsessed with having him reprise the role on my show. As an added bonus, maybe this even gets 'Spaceballs' back in the conversation and I can get my dream of helping make a sequel!"
Moranis provided his voice for Dark Helmet in the upcoming episode titled "Spaceballs," airing on Wednesday, May 9 (8 p.m. EST). Moranis' voice appears in a dream sequence when young Adam Goldberg (Sean Giambrone) encounters Dark Helmet storming his bedroom to battle with the Schwartz. In the dream, Goldberg promises to get a sequel to "Spaceballs" produced before waking up.
"The Goldbergs" is an autobiography of executive producer Goldberg's experiences of growing up in a suburban family in the 1980s. Identical to real life, both the character and creator are lifelong "Star Wars" fanatics.
