Nineteen months after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Huth Road Elementary School teacher Carol Horrigan is fighting back the best way she knows how: in song.
The music teacher has organized Grand Island Sings for Hope, an inspirational concert on Monday, Oct. 17. Proceeds from event will benefit breast cancer services at Mary's Room in Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center.
Since her diagnosis on March 1, 2010, Horrigan has undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
"You have no control over what happens to you in your life if you get cancer," Horrigan said Wednesday following a rehearsal with fifth and sixth grade students who will be among the scores to perform in the Grand Island High School auditorium. "But I felt like I had a little bit of control sharing music, and it always makes me feel better."
The audience can get into the spirit of the event in advance by watching a Pink Glove Dance video online. A Huth Road Elementary School video is one of many posted in a Pink Glove Dance competition. The school's entry needs some more love from viewers. Though the video has already received more than 1,800 votes, Horrigan is hoping more people will see the video and show their support with the click of a mouse.
