Lewiston Area Academic Accolades

Pauline Muto has been elected to the University of Rochester's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest honorary academic society. Faculty members in Phi Beta Kappa select students for the society based on their outstanding scholarly achievements, humanistic values, and personal character.

Muto, the daughter of Guy and Laurie Muto, is a resident of Lewiston who graduated from the university with a bachelor's degree in psychology with honors in May 2011.

Jacqueline Butera, a resident of Lewiston, was among 1,749 students who received undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates of advanced study from The College of Saint Rose in Albany. Butera received a Certificate of Advanced Study as a member of the Class of 2011.

•SUNY Oswego has awarded merit scholarships to more than 600 incoming students, including Haleigh J. Brown of Ransomville. Brown received a $17,600 Presidential Scholarship. The award recognizes past academic achievement and potential for success.

She has reserved a place in the incoming freshman class for the fall semester. Classes will begin Aug. 29.

Sarah Stephens, a law major and a resident of Niagara University, was among nearly 3,000 students from the University of Toledo who made the spring 2011 dean's list.

The dean's list recognizes full-time undergraduate students who earn a 3.5 or above grade-point average for the semester.

•Local residents named to the dean's list at Canisius College for the spring 2011 semester include Brian Almendinger of Sanborn, a junior accounting major.

•The following students were named to the School of the Professions spring 2011 dean's list at Buffalo State College: Kimberly Colucci of Lewiston, the daughter of Dominic and Wendy Colucci; Charles Mantell of Lewiston, the son of Charles and Nancy Mantell; and Raymond Gruarin of Youngstown, the son of Leylâ Sheehan-Gruarin and Dennis Gruarin.

To qualify, students must earn a minimum term GPA of 3.5 and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours.

•The following students were named to the School of Education spring 2011 dean's list at Buffalo State College: Dennis Luzak of Lewiston, the son of Dennis and Barbara Luzak; Alison Wendel of Sanborn, the daughter of Terry and Colleen Wendel; Hannah Maries of Youngstown, the daughter of Dave and Deb Maries; and Michael Murray of Youngstown, the son of Sherry Murray.

Shawn Haseley of Sanborn has been named to the School of Natural and Social Sciences spring 2011 dean's list at Buffalo State College. Haseley is the son of Randy and Diane Haseley.
