Nonprofit organizations serving Niagara County invited to apply for grant funding

The Verizon Media Community Benefit Fund for Lockport and the Verizon Media Community Benefit Fund for Niagara County - Empire State Development, two grant funds administered by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, are now accepting applications from nonprofits serving Niagara County. Qualifying nonprofits are welcome to apply for both grant funds.

On Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order extending limitations he placed on social gatherings to slow the spread of COVID-19. His mandate, "which closed or otherwise restricted public or private businesses or places of public accommodation, and which required postponement or cancellation of all nonessential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason (e.g. parties, celebrations, games, meetings or other social events) ... shall be continued ... until 11:59 p.m. on April 29, 2020, unless later extended by a future executive order."

WarnerMedia announced it will air the half-hour special, "Sesame Street: Elmo's Playdate," simultaneously across HBO, HBO Latino, TBS, TNT, truTV, Cartoon Network and Boomerang on Tuesday, April 14 (7-7:30 p.m. ET/PT). The special will also air on PBS KIDS at the same time, and will later air internationally in Australia, Canada and the UK.
Higgins: $204,000-plus for Michigan Street Baptist Church

Rapid testing at Father Baker Manor identifies COVID-19 cases

Catholic Health received more than 900 COVID-19 rapid test kits from Cepheid Inc. last Friday, making it possible for the health system to quickly test and contain the spread of the coronavirus at Father Baker Manor in Orchard Park. In all, Catholic Health performed 600 tests throughout its system in just over one day, increasing total testing within Erie Country by 29%.

New York Farm Bureau is requesting immediate help for farmers who are facing serious economic challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. The recently passed CARES Act provides $9.5 billion in funding for USDA, and NYFB is encouraging that funding to be used for direct payments to farms.

At 11:07 a.m. Saturday, Niagara County Sheriff's Office patrol units were dispatched to the area of 5355 Walmore Road. They investigated a confirmed report of a female driver retrieving a long gun from the bushes and handing it to a male passenger of a black, four-door sedan. Further information indicated the female re-entered the vehicle and traveled southbound toward Saunders Settlement Road.

NCSO officer tests positive for COVID-19

Niagara County Acting Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced a corrections officer employed by the Niagara County Correctional Facility has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. This individual, who has been off work for the past two weeks after developing symptoms relating to the virus, is recovering at home. This is the first employee with the NCSO diagnosed with COVID-19.

The governor also directed schools and nonessential businesses to stay closed for an additional two weeks, through April 29. The state will re-evaluate after this additional two-week period.
