Congressman Brian Higgins welcomed a call by 34 Canadian members of Parliament for a cost-benefit analysis of the underused housing tax (UHT). The Niagara County Department of Health (NCDOH) confirmed a rabid bat on Porter Avenue, City of North Tonawanda, on July 3. Three domestic cats came in contact with a bat that tested positive for rabies. As a result of the incident, the cats received required rabies booster vaccines and must quarantine for a time prescribed in the New York State Sanitary Code.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced 30-year-old Nicholas D. D'Angelo of Niagara Falls was sentenced this afternoon before State Supreme Court Justice Debra Givens to six months in jail followed by 10 years of probation with sex offender conditions. He will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from custody.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced 29-year-old Kente Q. Bell of Buffalo was sentenced this morning before Erie County Court Judge Kenneth Case to 18 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. He was sentenced today as a second violent felony offender.

At approximately 8:53 p.m. last night, July 4, a 46-year-old man from Niagara Falls was shot in the arm and the abdomen on 16th Street in Niagara Falls. He was then transported to ECMC. Currently, there is no update on his condition.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced she signed legislation to address the minimum age of lifeguards at children's camps. Legislation (S.6467-A/A.5821A) will require lifeguards for children's camps to be at least 17 years of age except that up to 50% of the required number of lifeguards on duty may be at least 15 years of age if they are under the supervision of a camp aquatics director. Lifeguards required for wilderness swimming must be at least 18 years of age.
