Beginning Oct. 2, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will introduce expanded in-office podiatry clinics, facilitated by Dr. Michael Merletti, DPM. The clinics will be conducted from noon to 4 p.m. every other Monday within the general surgery office, "marking a strategic move to provide patients direct access to specialized podiatric care."

Sophia Brielle Benintende of Williamsville was a fierce, philanthropic 9-year-old girl who bravely fought an aggressive and rare type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Sophia passed away on May 9, after an extraordinarily courageous two-year battle. Her passion for helping others continues to live on through her nonprofit pediatric cancer organization, Sophia the Fierce Inc.

The Grand Island Fire Co. held a recruitment event on Sept. 16 in front of Tops Friendly Markets. Zach Bernfeld, one of the volunteers at the event, said people should consider joining the fire company because "It's good to help your community. You get free training. You can go through a bunch of fire classes and become an EMT or a paramedic, if you'd like. You can become a cadet at 16 and a regular member at 18."

According to Be the Match rules, all correspondence between donors and recipients has to remain anonymous until a year after the donation.

"Fright Fest" is back for its spookiest season yet. Opening Saturday, Sept. 23, and running select dates through Oct. 21, this year's event boasts BOO by day, including a trick-or-treat trail, "The Hunt for BOO," a costume parade, a new web maze, and family activities in "Boo Bother's Bay." Earlier this month, the New York state-commissioned Tourism Economics research study for 2022 was released, detailing the economic impact of tourism across the state. The study revealed that the total traveler spend in Niagara County in 2022 reached $969 million, which is an increase of 16.5% relative to 2021.

Niagara County Legislator Will Collins announced registration is open for the county's next household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 23, in Lockport. The event is open to all Niagara County residents, but one must register in advance.
