Assemblyman Dennis Gabryzak, D-Cheektowaga, and State Sen. Mark Grisanti, R-North Buffalo, announced Monday that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law legislation that would require cities and employers of firefighters to provide emergency escape systems for all firefighters.

The Mighty Niagara Half Marathon will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 9 a.m. in conjunction with the Hospice Dash 5K Walk/Run. The half marathon, which was added to the event in 2011 (and had a turnout of more than 1,000 participants), has been expanded this year. The event will include more live bands and music, a new website at www.mightyniagarahalfmarathon.com, and a new name.

At 8:36 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, Grand Island Fire Co. rescue personnel responded to a three-car motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Baseline and Love roads. The force of the impact caused a rollover of two of the vehicles, according to Deputy Fire Chief Matt Osinski.

Grand Island Board of Education rescinds principal's tenure approval

At the regular meeting of the Grand Island Board of Education Monday evening, trustees voted 5-2 to rescind the approval for tenure for Kerri Nowak, principal of Huth Road School. Nowak's tenure would have officially begun with her first 2012-13 day of service toward the end of this month. Instead, her probationary period is extended for one year.

Recycling containers, lending request, zoning at Porter Board session

Porter Town Board members talked recycling containers and debated lending a generator in an active session Monday, that also saw the holding of three public hearings.

The board was updated on a state Department of Environmental Conservation recycling grant application from town grant writer Bernie Rotella. It also heard concerns by East Avenue resident Ernie Lavigueur on keeping residents apprised regarding any changes to the recycling program.

Ransomville Speedway: Wright wins 2nd of rookie season at Big R

Despite a 90 percent chance of rain, Ransomville Speedway was able to complete its 15th show of the 2012 season without a drop. Lucky? Perhaps. Suffice to say it was good to be at the Big R last Friday night (Aug. 10) despite the meteorologist's dismal forecast. Lesson to learn - don't listen to the weather "experts."
