NY Farm Bureau statement on new agriculture census results

The USDA released its 2022 agriculture census revealing a cause of concern for New York agriculture. While 98% of farms remain family owned in the state, the overall number of farms declined by nearly 2,800. That is about a 9% drop from the previous 2017 agriculture census, and the steepest decline in the past three decades. The state also lost 364,000 acres of farmland over the past five years.

The New York Power Authority and New York State Canal Corp. announced a new five-year contract agreement with the Civil Service Employees Association, Local 1000, AFSCME, AFL-CIO. The labor union represents more than 380 New York State Canal Corp. employees who operate and maintain the 524-mile New York State Canal system. The NYPA and Canal Corp. board of trustees approved the agreement Feb. 6 at the regular public meeting.
