The following incidents occurred from Sept. 2 to 8, as reported by the Grand Island Fire Co. A total of 29 calls were answered by the department during this period. The GIFC has now responded to 995 calls so far this year.

WOW begins 26th season

With the 2013-14 season, Women of the Word began their 26th year of interdenominational Christian Bible study on Grand Island, hosted by Trinity United Methodist Church, 2100 Whitehaven Road. Their Premiere Celebration happened this morning.
Veronica Connor Middle School student revived by GI school official

Veronica Conner Middle School Assistant Principal Eleanor Payne stepped in Monday, Sept. 9, to do CPR on a 10-year-old student who had collapsed in the school hallway.

Shortly before 4 p.m., the Grand Island Fire Co. responded to a report of a "student down" at the Ransom Road school.

According to the GIFC report, the student had left the school earlier in the day with an unspecified illness, but had returned with her mother to pick up some items when she collapsed near her locker.

Assemblyman John Ceretto joined Gov. Andrew Cuomo, State Sen. George Maziarz, Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster and other local officials today to announce the approval of the Hamister hotel project in downtown Niagara Falls. The hotel represents a $25.3 million investment in the future of the city.
Volunteers sought for Sanborn Autumn Fest

The Sanborn Business & Professional Association is looking for volunteers to assist in selling pumpkins during the Sanborn Autumn Fest, Oct. 5-6 at the Sanborn-Lewiston Farm Museum (Route 31 in Sanborn). From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, the SBPA will sell pumpkins as part of a fundraiser for the association, but need assistance in manpower.

Cuomo announces agreement on $25.3 million project with Hamister, City of Niagara Falls

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo visited Niagara Falls Thursday to announce an agreement on the $25.3 million, mixed-use project proposed by Hamister Development Inc., and to thank the City Council for its support. The City Council recently voted in favor of the project, which is located at a city-owned site at 310 Rainbow Blvd., in downtown Niagara Falls.

"With the approval of the Hamister project, the City of Niagara Falls is taking a major step forward in our ongoing work to revive the local tourism industry and economy," Cuomo said.
