Erie County maintains A1 credit rating, receives upgraded outlook from Moody's

In its latest credit opinion, issued Dec. 24, Moody's ratings agency maintained Erie County's credit rating at A1 while upgrading the county's outlook from "stable" to "positive." In issuing its report, Moody's noted the improvement of the county's reserves and liquidity, and discontinuation of reliance on cash flow note financing, as well as a declining liability profile as credit strengths in issuing the upgrade.

Vision screenings scheduled for Grand Island children

The Grand Island Lions, in conjunction with the Grand Island Central School District, KidSight USA and Lions S.E.E. program, will perform vision screenings in the public schools and St. Stephen's from Jan. 12-16. Effective Jan. 1, 2026, health insurers will be required to cover medically necessary EpiPens and cap out-of-pocket costs at $100 per year, breast cancer screening and imaging, and the cost of scalp cooling systems to reduce hair loss during chemotherapy.

Gov. Kathy Hochul today reminded New Yorkers to remain cautious while traveling this week, as severe winter weather conditions and lake-effect snow will continue impacting the state. Lake-effect snow off the shores of lakes Erie and Ontario is expected to fall until Saturday, and while winds are expected to continue subsiding, blowing snow that creates hazardous driving conditions remains a concern, especially during New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Gov. Kathy Hochul today expanded New York's state of emergency statewide, as an intense winter storm continues to impact much of upstate New York. Following periods of ice and rain throughout the state during the overnight hours, a long-duration lake-effect snow system moved into the state Monday morning, with winds as high as 70 mph in Western New York causing whiteout conditions.
