State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli has commended the State Assembly and State Senate for passing legislation to help local governments deal with the financial impact of "Superstorm" Sandy. The three bills submitted by DiNapoli will now go to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

An amendment supporting the National Guard and Military Reserve Force advanced by Congressman Chris Collins, NY-27, has been adopted by the House of Representatives. Collins successfully inserted the amendment into the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014, which establishes all programs and spending levels for the Department of Defense.

NBC's "The Voice" crowned Danielle Bradbery as the winner in Tuesday's season finale, earning her the grand prize of a recording contract with Universal Music Group. Bradbery, from Team Blake, beat out fellow finalists Michelle Chamuel and the Swon Brothers — each of whom performed on the telecast along with several other top musical acts.

Congressman Brian Higgins, NY-26, is urging leadership in the House of Representatives to act quickly to prevent college student loan rates from doubling. The current interest rate under the Federal Direct Student Loan Program is 3.4 percent. That number is expected to increase to 6.8 percent on July 1, unless preventative action is taken.

The Lewiston Knitwits (20 knitters and growing) gathered this fall, winter and spring to enjoy knitting and companionship twice a month at the Lewiston Opera Hall on Center Street. What began on a whim, based on a shared interest in knitting and crocheting, has happily culminated in an uplifting, shared beautification project.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, today helped pass the Safe Patient Handling Act. The bill, which he co-sponsored, establishes a statewide patient handling policy for all health care facilities in New York. Ceretto noted this policy ensures that best practices in regard to safe patient handling are followed in medical facilities across New York state.

George Maziarz, R-Newfane, passed legislation designed to protect taxpayers and ensure that money from the New York Power Authority is not wasted. A $750,000 challenge grant from The John R. Oishei Foundation to the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center Foundation has given a jump start to Memorial's $3 million campaign for a new inpatient cardiac/stroke care center. The grant is conditioned on Memorial raising a matching amount.

Assemblyman John Ceretto has announced the passing of bipartisan legislation to restore funding to programs for people with developmental disabilities. Ceretto, who co-sponsored the legislation, worked with his Assembly colleagues to restore funding for the programs that people with developmental disabilities rely on to maintain their quality of life. Ceretto has been a vocal advocate for the restoration of the funding since it was cut from the budget in March.
