Village of Lewiston: Soluri, Toohey, Geiben endorse Symmonds for mayor

In the past 37 years, four people have served as mayor in the Village of Lewiston. Three of those people are endorsing a political newcomer who seeks that office in the June 17 election.

Richard Soluri, Bill Geiben and Marilyn Toohey are supporting Jamie Symmonds, who is running for mayor against incumbent Terry Collesano and fellow challenger Jacqueline Lampman.

The Village of Lewiston election is Tuesday, June 17. Residents can vote from noon until 9 p.m. at the Red Brick Municipal Building, 145 N. Fourth St.

HART fundraiser recognizes those contributing to organization's success

Cancer doesn't care how young you are. It doesn't care what gender you are. Cancer affects so many people because it doesn't just affect the person with cancer. GI Relay For Life to 'Rock-Out Cancer'

Grand Island's 12th annual Relay For Life is here, and Island residents are buzzing with excitement. For the last few months, teams have been collecting bottles, selling barbecue chicken, holding bake sales and raffling various baskets all to raise money for cancer research and prevention.

As the American Cancer Society's largest fundraiser, Relay For Life has become a global event in more than 20 different countries each year. Locally, Relay is set to open at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, on Grand Island. It will run overnight until 2 a.m. June 1 at Veterans Park.

The Lewiston Police Department suffered a loss in its K-9 unit Wednesday. "Radar," a tracking, drug recognition and patrol dog, was put down. He had been diagnosed with splenic cancer at Cornell University.

Blanche Joan (née Majda) Fibich, age 92, of Niwot, Colorado, formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, May 5, 2014, while at home. Her daughter, Sylvia Fibich, and son-in-law, Tom Yulsman, were at her side.
