Empire State Development: WNY awarded $28.5 million through Regional Council initiative

Empire State Development announced Western New York was awarded $28.5 million through Gov. Kathy Hochul's 2025 Regional Economic Development Council initiative. This funding will support 41 projects across five counties, leveraging $56.2 million in additional public and private investments. Western New York was also awarded $10 million to use toward future high-impact projects.
YMCA names Anne Reif interim president/CEO

YMCA Buffalo Niagara's board of directors unanimously voted to name Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Anne Reif as interim president and CEO, effective Jan. 17. Reif brings more than 45 years of experience to the Y, with six of those in her current COO role.
Vision screenings scheduled for Grand Island children

The Grand Island Lions, in conjunction with the Grand Island Central School District, KidSight USA and Lions S.E.E. program, will perform vision screenings in the public schools and St. Stephen's from Jan. 12-16. It's expected nearly 750 pre-K to second-grade children will be screened. They will be joined by a team of experienced screeners from other Lions Club chapters in the area.

Speaking at the gazebo in the Grand Island Town Commons on Dec. 16 as part of a local Chanukah celebration, Gurary, who organized the event with Rabbi Yosef Chartonow of Chabad of Buffalo, said, "The message of Chanukah is the message of light. There's a lot of darkness in the world, especially this year. We know what happened in Sydney."

Niagara County Clerk warns residents without REAL ID of airport fee

Niagara County Joseph A. Jastrzemski today warned those who are flying domestically but still do not have a REAL ID-compliant license or other acceptable documents that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin charging them a $45 fee starting Feb. 1, 2026. The fee is to use the TSA Confirmi.ID process, which uses advanced biometrics and biographic data for identification verification.
