Sophia Brielle Benintende of Williamsville was a fierce, philanthropic 9-year-old girl who bravely fought an aggressive and rare type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Sophia passed away on May 9, after an extraordinarily courageous two-year battle. Her passion for helping others continues to live on through her nonprofit pediatric cancer organization, Sophia the Fierce Inc.

Free car seat checks available during Child Passenger Safety Week

Their tour bus stopped at the Freedom Crossing Monument on Water Street, and they were greeted by Sally and Josiah Tryon (aka Eva Nicklas and Tim Henderson). The two Lewiston legends recounted tales of first coming to the village, efforts to lead people to freedom, and the story behind Susan Geissler's famed bronze statue.

Recycler gifts $9,000 to Camp Good Days

On Friday, electronics recycler Sunnking presented a $9,875.01 check to Camp Good Days and Special Times, a nonprofit organization helping children and families with cancer. The funds were raised as a part of Sunnking's 13th annual "e-Scrap for Camp" fundraiser. The company saw 323 area businesses participate in the electronics recycling donation drive between Buffalo and Rochester.
