The heat is on! AAA warns of extreme heat & dangers of hot vehicles

The heat of summer is here, and this weekend is expected to be another hot one. AAA Western and Central New York is reminding motorists to be aware of the dangers of hot cars. Since 1998, 917 children have died from pediatric vehicular heatstroke, including at least 10 deaths already reported this year in the U.S. While an overwhelming majority of these deaths are accidental, such tragedies are often preventable.
Still no consensus on Amazon benefits, even as town approves project

Her team said a series of listening sessions will allow the state to hear directly from farmers about their priorities in addressing climate, workforce and economic challenges, and will help inform the state's federal priorities for critical funding and policy changes in the areas of agriculture, nutrition and the environment.
New legislation expands pedestrian & bicyclist safety

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently signed legislation (S.1078B/A.5084A) that requires new drivers to learn about pedestrian and bicyclist safety awareness as a component of the prelicensing exam and as a prerequisite for obtaining a license to operate a motor vehicle.

NYS banning smoking in state-owned parks & beaches

Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed legislation (S.4142/A.5061) prohibiting smoking in all state-owned beaches, boardwalks, marinas, playgrounds, recreation centers and group camps. Smoking in these designated areas will be punishable with a civil fine of $50.
Hochul announces $234 million in additional food assistance for July

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for July. All households participating in SNAP - including those already at the maximum level of benefits - will receive a supplemental allotment this month, resulting in a roughly $234 million infusion of federal funding into the New York state economy.

Decreasing oil prices push gas prices lower

Today's national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $4.68, down 13 cents from last Monday, and down 12 cents since reported last Tuesday. One year ago, the price was $3.14. The New York state average is $4.80, down 9 cents since last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.20.
Niagara Falls Police investigating shooting outside 7-Eleven

At approximately 5:15 a.m. Saturday, Niagara Falls Police Department officers responded to 15th Street and Pine Avenue for a report of a man shot. Upon arrival at 1504 Pine Ave., officers located a 28-year-old male suffering from numerous serious gunshot wounds, laying on the ground outside a 7-Eleven.
