A new school year is about to begin, and many preparations are undertaken by parents across Niagara County. Many are out purchasing the latest in backpacks or new clothes to start the year out.

AAA Western and Central New York, along with law enforcement, has kicked off its annual "School's Open, Drive Carefully" campaign as back-to-school season gets underway. With school buses back on the roads, commuters should give themselves extra time and be prepared for bus traffic. Motorists should also be cognizant of less-experienced students drivers returning to high school and college.

The New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) is reminding drivers to be extra careful this year as school districts begin to reopen across the state. NYAPT is also alerting parents and caregivers that there could be disruptions to school transportation this year, as school districts continue to face an unprecedented shortage in school bus drivers driven by the ongoing demand for workers across the state.

Incoming freshmen Valentina Krajacic and Eoin Potwin, and Niagara University junior Gabriella Cole, are the 2023 recipients of the university's Merani Scholarship, a collaboration between Niagara and the Merani Hotel Group to provide opportunities for high-level experiential learning in the hospitality industry. The students will receive an annual scholarship of $7,500 and paid rotating internships at Merani properties.

Registration is now open for Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University's Kids 'n Arts Camp, a unique art and theater-fused five-week program entering its 19th year. Camp is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, July 10 to Aug. 11. Participants ages 5-12 can attend one or more weeks of camp. Child care is available before and after camp hours.

Canisius College has successfully petitioned the New York State Education Department Board of Regents for university designation. The transition will take place during summer 2023 alongside the rollout of the first strategic plan for the university. In August, ahead of the start of the fall semester, Canisius will unveil a refreshed branding initiative to introduce the school's new identity.
