Falcons Flashback Awards 2017-18

Phew. What a year it's been. Five teams won Niagara Frontier League championships, some teams and athletes reached the state finals; nevertheless, Falcons athletics gave this writer a lot to report on this year. Without further ado, here is the first ever Falcons Flashback Awards for the 2017-18 school year. The Falcons Flashback Awards will pick a most valuable player from each team during the past year, as well as a Best Team Award.

Best of SUNY includes NCCC Graduate

This year's Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition featured a piece, "Untitled" by Niagara County Community College graduate, Danielle Dirks. The art exhibition showcases work by student artists from across the 64 State University of New York campuses, allowing for a year-round display to be seen by wider audiences at the State University Plaza in Albany, the SUNY Global Center in New York City, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office in Washington, D.C. Danielle's piece was selected to receive an honorable mention award and a prize of $500. 
Lew-Port Class of 1968 reunion committee meets

Catholic Academy visits Community Missions

Ms. Christina Lopardi's fourth-grade class from Catholic Academy of Niagara Falls came out to Community Missions to learn more about the needs of the community. Students brought with them a donation of $100 and washcloths for use in the shelter.

On Tuesday evening, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons strolled into Williamsville East High School with one thing on their mind: winning a Class AA Section VI title. Unfortunately, the Falcons were halted by No. 5 Lancaster, as the Legends defeated N-W, 7-5.
Niagara-Wheatfield softball rallies into sectional finals

It's been about seven years since Niagara-Wheatfield softball coach Jim Proefrock could say his team was heading to the big game. Proefrock breathed a sigh of relief Thursday night, as the Falcons defeated the Williamsville North Spartans, 8-4, in the Section VI Class AA semifinals.

On Friday evening, the Niagara Falls Wolverines and Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons sent their ace pitchers out to the mound for a big Niagara Frontier League game at the Niagara Falls turf facility. With two aces on the mound, majority of the crowd thought it would be a pitchers duel. That was not the case, Friday. The Falcons used 21 hits to defeat the Wolverines, 22-11, in a game where the score was not indicative of the gameplay throughout.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons softball team has had a knack for producing a quality team out of the Niagara Frontier League. With five Section VI titles and eight Niagara Frontier League crowns under their belt dating back to 1976 and 1982, respectively, the 2018 Falcons could use their experienced roster to ring in No. 6 and No. 9.
HS Softball: Quider does it all in Falcons victory

Mackenzie Quider has a huge role for the Niagara-Wheatfield softball team. Not only does she pitch in the circle for the Falcons, she hits fourth in a strong lineup. On Tuesday evening, she showed exactly what she's capable of. The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons defeated the Grand Island Vikings in Niagara Frontier League play, 3-2. The game was the first home game of the year for the Falcons due to dreary April weather.
UB to award President's Medal, honorary degrees

Bottom of lineup leads Falcons to league win over Ken-East

Tuesday evening provided some not-so-great conditions to play baseball. Nevertheless, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons were on the new turf facility at Kenmore West as the home team versus Kenmore East. In a game that provided 21 walks, double-digit errors, 22 runs and only 11 hits combined by both teams, the Falcons walked away soaked as the victors, 15-7.

On Saturday afternoon, local high school basketball talent stormed into Niagara Falls High School for the annual PAL/ACE all-star games. The day of basketball included a freshman/sophomore game, as well as a junior/senior game. Each team, for both games, included a mix of the classes. Attendees who showed paid $5 for a ticket and all proceeds earned were donated to the Niagara Police Athletic League.

On Wednesday evening, weather conditions were how they've been for majority of the spring - bitter cold and windy. Despite real feel temperatures in the low 30's, the Grand Island Vikings baseball team defeated the Niagara Falls Wolverines, 3-1.

The daylong conference was presented by the university's Rose Bente Lee Ostapenko Center for Race, Equality, and Mission, which was established last fall to leverage change on causes associated with diversity, equality and social justice - both on campus and within the community.

Saturday night in the state quarterfinals, Peters was in on every scoring play. The Falcons defeated the Syracuse Cougars, 3-1, to move on to the state semifinals

It's been four days shy of three years since the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons hockey team raised their last Section VI championship. On Monday evening, the Falcons got back to the top, as they defeated unbeaten Williamsville North, 2-0, in the Section VI large schools title game.

HS Hoops: North Tonawanda survives test from Grand Island

Wednesday night, the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks faced the Grand Island Vikings in the Niagara Frontier League's third place crossover game. The Lumberjacks got off to a hot start, but the Vikings continued to push their way back, falling just short. North Tonawanda defeated Grand Island, 59-53, in front of a loud Vikings crowd.
HS Hoops: Niagara-Wheatfield drops non-league game versus Maryvale

Niagara-Wheatfield coach Erik O'Bryan will admit, his team has been close in almost every game, but a big run by the opposing team seems to always haunt the Falcons at the end. That's exactly what happened Monday night, as the Falcons dropped a non-league contest versus Maryvale, 65-49.
