As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from "New York State on PAUSE," looking toward nicer weather and Memorial Day weekend, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen's Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed.

Casey's Cabana, a seasonal summer restaurant at 1437 Ferry Road on the shores of the Niagara River, was founded by three Grand Island High School students. It will open its third season at 11 a.m. Monday, May 11, for takeout and free delivery to local residents.

In Niagara Falls, there are few images more iconic to locals than the giant cow that sits perched atop of De Dee's Dairy. Around this time of year, the beloved bovine is usually overlooking scores of sticky-faced patrons and pineapple-sized ice cream cones at the picnic table below. The sight is something of an official announcement that spring is here.

Everything about this year's Best Fish Fry contest was different - except the winner. For the third year in a row, Apple Granny Restaurant battered, I mean bested, the competition. The Village of Lewiston restaurant once again garnered the most votes (and the most voters) to take the title.

In an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a mandate earlier this month forcing New York restaurants and bars to close their doors to the public. Once that happened, many of these eateries switched to an acceptable form of service: takeout and delivery.

In the interest of public safety, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has severely curtailed the ways in which people can gather together. Restaurants and bars are limited to takeout and delivery; movie theaters, bowling alleys, shopping malls and hair salons are temporarily closed; events are cancelled; and nonessential businesses have to reduce workforce 100%.

Super Bowl is kind of a big deal at our house. My husband, Fred, has been hosting a Super Bowl party that predates our marriage. The "Caso Party" is now in its 33rd year. I try to mix in some new dishes along with the obligatory pizza and wings, and this year it's going to be homemade potato skins (which are much more cost-effective for folks on a budget.)
