The late Margaret Gill, a U.S. Army nurse who grew up in North Tonawanda, has been inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame. A plaque commemorating Gill's service was unveiled Aug. 19 in North Tonawanda City Hall.

British and American forces will once again struggle for control of Old Fort Niagara during the site's "War of 1812 Encampment," set for Labor Day weekend. The event will feature tactical demonstrations at 3 p.m. each day, musket and cannon firings, uniform programs and living history camps that depict life on the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's "Get With The Guidelines-Stroke" Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes Mount St. Mary's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. Mount St. Mary's has been designated as a stroke center by the New York State Department of Health.

CBS today announced 16 of 18 castaways who will compete against each other on "Survivor: South Pacific," when the Emmy-winning series returns for its 23rd season with a special 90-minute edition, Wednesday, Sept. 14 (8-9:30 p.m.), on the CBS Television Network. Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, recently sponsored legislation that will expand school bus service to families and children living with physical disabilities. Ceretto noted a number of instances throughout New York in which disabled parents and guardians have been denied school bus services for their children because of the family's proximity to the school. The assemblyman's measure would allow boards of education to grant parents or guardians physically limited by a disability the option to obtain bus services.
