The late Margaret Gill, a U.S. Army nurse who grew up in North Tonawanda, has been inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame. A plaque commemorating Gill's service was unveiled Aug. 19 in North Tonawanda City Hall.

Niagara University's Castellani Art Museum will open its new exhibition, "Artists View the Falls: 300 Years of Niagara Falls Imagery," at the museum's satellite gallery in the Niagara Falls Conference Center, 101 Old Falls St., in downtown Niagara Falls.

British and American forces will once again struggle for control of Old Fort Niagara during the site's "War of 1812 Encampment," set for Labor Day weekend. The event will feature tactical demonstrations at 3 p.m. each day, musket and cannon firings, uniform programs and living history camps that depict life on the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's "Get With The Guidelines-Stroke" Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes Mount St. Mary's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. Mount St. Mary's has been designated as a stroke center by the New York State Department of Health.

The North Tonawanda Federation Varsity Hockey Team has begun its yearly fundraising efforts. The cost of one season of hockey is approximately $35,000, which the school district is unable to provide. Therefore, the burden falls on the players and the booster club to raise the money.

CBS today announced 16 of 18 castaways who will compete against each other on "Survivor: South Pacific," when the Emmy-winning series returns for its 23rd season with a special 90-minute edition, Wednesday, Sept. 14 (8-9:30 p.m.), on the CBS Television Network. Two of the 18 castaways, to be revealed later this week, are former players who will return to seek redemption.

Ed. program leads to initial and professional New York state teacher certification in both early childhood education and students with disabilities from birth through grade 2.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, recently sponsored legislation that will expand school bus service to families and children living with physical disabilities. Ceretto noted a number of instances throughout New York in which disabled parents and guardians have been denied school bus services for their children because of the family's proximity to the school. The assemblyman's measure would allow boards of education to grant parents or guardians physically limited by a disability the option to obtain bus services.

Artpark's fourth annual end-of-summer free "Family Movie Night" will present the Academy Award-winning "Toy Story 3" on Monday, Aug. 22. The event will begin at dusk in the upper park on Artpark's giant Jumbotron screen. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for this free, ticketless event. Parking also will be free.
