On a shoestring budget, friends and families will tighten their shoelaces and step out to the community on Saturday, Sept. 10, to help raise positive awareness about Down syndrome in the 15th Buddy Walk of Buffalo Niagara. The Buddy Walk is sponsored by The Family & Friends Down Syndrome Association of Niagara Inc., and is a licensed Buddy Walk event and affiliate organization of The National Down Syndrome Society.

Niagara University announces Carrie McLaughlin has been named the new dean of students following a nationwide search. McLaughlin comes to Niagara after five years as the director of student life at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. She will begin her new position on Monday, Sept. 12.

Niagara County Economic Development Alliance, in conjunction with the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency and the Niagara County Center for Economic Development, will host the third annual Niagara USA Business Familiarization Tour, designed to increase awareness among Western New York and Southern Ontario economic development site and business decision makers regarding the vast opportunities for business development in Niagara County. The tour will take place on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 3 until 5 p.m.

Assemblyman John Ceretto is pleased to announce that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority has unveiled a new $3 million rebate program for the purchase of high-efficiency Energy Star refrigerators and washing machines. Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, is sponsoring legislation to help streamline Niagara County's pistol permit process. The bill would help alleviate the current logjam in the license process while supporting Second Amendment rights by allowing a certified staff member of the Niagara County Clerk's Office to access mental health records for pistol license applications. Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-Newfane, will also introduce this legislation in the state Senate.

At 8:36 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, Grand Island Fire Co. firefighters responded to a structure fire at 303 Park Place, which had been reported by a neighbor who noticed "heavy smoke coming from the eaves." This home has been under construction by Joel Kruppa, a Niagara Falls firefighter who was not on the premises when the fire erupted.
