Environmental organizations collaborate for Great Lakes education

The Western New York Regional Economic Development Council today announced it has scheduled a second community workshop in Buffalo due to overwhelming public demand to participate in the regional council planning process. The community workshops are designed to gain input and aid in the creation of the council's five-year strategic economic development plan for the Western New York Region, which includes Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, and State Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-Newfane, today announced that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation allowing the transfer of land from Niagara County to the Town of Newfane. Ceretto noted the land transfer would give Newfane the ability to improve the area and make it a more desirable tourist destination.

Statement from Wallenda and Western New York legislators in response to bill signing

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law legislation (A.8206-a/S.4844-a) that would allow Nik Wallenda to perform a high wire walk between the U.S. and Canada over Niagara Falls. The State Legislature approved the measure in June and, according to the law, Wallenda will have one year from Friday (Sept. 23) to perform the walk. The remaining hurdle is for Wallenda to obtain approvals from Canadian officials.

There was a familiar face on the opening of Season 3 of NBC's show "The Sing-Off" on Monday night. Michael Pittman, a 2009 Niagara-Wheatfield graduate, is now a junior at the University of Rochester and a member of it's a cappella group the YellowJackets. The group opened the show, and was not one of the two groups voted off, so local fans can catch them (and Michael) again on the Oct. 3 show. The Sept. 26 show features the second half of the competitors.
