New York State Sen. George D. Maziarz and New York State Assemblyman John D. Ceretto today announced that the date has been set for the initial meeting of a task force dedicated to the marketing and promotion of Nik Wallenda's upcoming walk on a high wire across the Niagara Gorge. The meeting will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 23, at the Niagara County Center for Economic Development.

Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, announced Monday that, through customer support, $160,107 has been donated to the Food Bank of Western New York in the annual "Check Out Hunger" campaign. Annually, Tops runs a two-week campaign where customers are asked to donate $2, $3, or $5 at check out, with proceeds benefiting the food bank.

Ceretto passes bill to punish gas-pump gouging

With gas prices continuing to soar, Assemblyman John Ceretto today helped pass legislation to prevent price gouging at the pump. The legislation, Assembly bill 1970, prohibits gas stations from changing the price of a gallon of gasoline more than once in a 24-hour period.

"While the state Legislature has little control over the wholesale price of gas, we do have the ability to protect consumers from being illegally gouged at the pump," Ceretto said. "Gasoline is the lifeblood of our economy, and it is incumbent upon us as lawmakers to prevent retailers in the Empire State from unfairly hiking their prices on hard-working New Yorkers."

State Sen. Mark Grisanti, R-60th, sponsored and passed a bill that is designed to change the makeup of the New York Power Authority to include a resident of Niagara County. The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. George Maziarz, R-62nd, amends the public authorities' law to provide that the NYPA board of trustees, appointed by the governor with the approval of the Senate, must contain one trustee who is from Niagara County and one who is from St. Lawrence County.
