The Grand Island Town Board approved, by a 5-0 vote, an application for funding from the New York State Department of Transportation's Transportation Alternative Program for ADA-compliant sidewalks in the center of town on Baseline Road. If the $375,000 grant is approved, the state would provide $300,000, and the town would provide 20 percent of the funding, or $75,000.

Beaver Island State Park announced members of the WNY Disc Golf Club will offer a clinic for beginner and recreational disc golfers looking to improve their game. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, at the park. The clinic will cover such things as proper ways to drive and putt, as well as disc selection and course etiquette.

Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, the Niagara River Greenway Commission and Beaver Island State Park will host the 13th annual Paddles Up Niagara on Saturday, July 28. Paddlers will have the opportunity to take in the Island scenery, wetlands, heron rookery and an active bald eagle nesting area during the event (from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.). There is no entry fee for the event, and the community is encouraged to come out and enjoy the water with other paddlers.

The 179th Erie County Fair will see the debut of a newly created exhibit area with the goal of exciting Western New Yorker's about technology, engineering and the sciences. "I-Hub at the Fair," with the "I" standing for "innovation, imagination & ingenuity," will be located inside the fair's Showplace Building. The display will focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) businesses and education through daily demonstrations, interactive displays and hands-on activities.
