The "Elementary Turkey Trot," held at Grand Island High School's track on Nov. 8, featured running races and a basket raffle, among other activities. Visitors to the event included a Viking and a few turkeys.

As the holiday season approaches, the Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island is preparing for its annual holiday food distribution - an effort that brightens the holidays for over 200 local individuals and families each year. Through the generosity of Grand Island residents, the Neighbors Foundation provides nonperishable food and gift cards to those facing hardship during this special time of year.

The state of New York has informed the Erie County Department of Social Services (ECDSS) this morning that the issuance of SNAP EBT benefits began Sunday, and will continue through next Monday, with 96% of SNAP households in Erie County receiving 100% of their authorized benefits.

Sean Ryan, Democratic nominee for mayor of Buffalo, declared victory Tuesday night, following a landslide election in which he earned nearly 72% of the vote, winning the three-way race by a decisive 49-point margin. It marks the largest victory in a contested Buffalo mayoral election since 1993.

They were there to warn thousands of county residents who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) and Home Energy Assistance (HEAP) programs to prepare to seek alternative food and energy assistance if the ongoing federal shutdown continues into November.

Several speakers at Monday's Grand Island Town Board meeting criticized the upcoming referendum that asks voters to decide if the town should buy the current Niagara Hyundai site at 1910 Alvin Road to be repurposed as the town community center. The dealership will be moving to Niagara Falls once a new facility is built there.
