Due to expected bitterly cold temperatures - and with the safety of our staff, volunteers, pet owners and pets in mind - the Erie County Department of Health has canceled the rabies vaccine clinic scheduled for Jan. 24. The new date is Saturday, Feb. 21, at the same time (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and same location, North Buffalo Community Center.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has announced the makeup date for the first lifeguard qualifier of the year. The new date is 11 a.m. Jan. 24 at Hamburg High School, 4111 Legion Drive Hamburg. Testing is required for anyone wishing to work as a lifeguard at any New York state park.

With the cold of winter upon us, the Rotary Club of Grand Island will host its annual Undie Sunday collection between Jan 24 and Feb 8. For 25 years, the Rotary Club has sponsored the collection of new and unused underclothing and socks. This year, there is a particular need for warm socks, T-shirts, underwear and leggings for men, women and children.

TSA to enforce $45 REAL ID verification fee beginning Feb. 1

Starting Feb. 1, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin enforcing a $45 identity-verification fee for passengers who attempt to fly without compliant identification. All travelers who do not present an acceptable form of a REAL ID, U.S. passport, or other accepted ID will be directed to TSA's optional ConfirmID identity-verification process at check-in, before entering the security screening line.

Erie County maintains A1 credit rating, receives upgraded outlook from Moody's

In its latest credit opinion, issued Dec. 24, Moody's ratings agency maintained Erie County's credit rating at A1 while upgrading the county's outlook from "stable" to "positive." In issuing its report, Moody's noted the improvement of the county's reserves and liquidity, and discontinuation of reliance on cash flow note financing, as well as a declining liability profile as credit strengths in issuing the upgrade.
Vision screenings scheduled for Grand Island children

The Grand Island Lions, in conjunction with the Grand Island Central School District, KidSight USA and Lions S.E.E. program, will perform vision screenings in the public schools and St. Stephen's from Jan. 12-16. It's expected nearly 750 pre-K to second-grade children will be screened. They will be joined by a team of experienced screeners from other Lions Club chapters in the area.
