Community meeting regarding Niagara student housing

Mayor Robert Restaino, representatives from Niagara University and members of the City of Niagara Falls administration will hold a community meeting with DeVeaux residents at Maple Avenue School at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11. The meeting will focus on student housing in the DeVeaux area.

It is with mixed emotions that I am announcing today that I will not seek a third term as supervisor for the Town of Niagara. I truly believe that everything and everyone has a shelf life, and it is time for me to "pass the baton" and spend more quality time with my family. I am very proud of our accomplishments over the past nine years, and I look forward to a new vision and new focus that the next town supervisor and board will have.

Early Saturday morning, the Niagara Falls Fire Department was called out to a structure fire at 431 20th St., around 2:30 a.m. Crews arrived on scene to find heavy flames coming from the building.
Niagara Falls: Arrest made in New Year's Day homicide

Niagara Falls Police have arrested a suspect in the homicide that occurred on the morning of Jan. 1 in the 2200 block of LaSalle Avenue. The suspect is charged with one count of murder in the second degree and will be arraigned in Niagara Falls City Court on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

On Dec. 29, at 11:58 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications center received a 911 call reporting a burglary that had just occurred at a residence on Pretoria Street in The Town of Niagara.

On Dec. 30, at 6:23 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications center received a fire alarm from the Wheatfield Towers Apartment Building. The fire alarm was followed by a water flow alarm from the same location.

The Office of City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino announced, "Modern Disposal will be performing regularly scheduled trash pickup for this week, Wednesday, Dec. 28, through Friday, Dec. 30. Those who normally are scheduled to have Monday or Tuesday garbage pickups will be pushed back to next week. There will be no item restrictions for those two days (Jan. 2-3)."

On Sunday morning, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office announced, "Effective immediately the travel ban for Niagara County has been lifted. A travel advisory will remain in place at this time. A travel advisory is also in place for the City of Lockport, City of Niagara Falls and the City of North Tonawanda."

On Friday afternoon, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office announced, "Niagara County has declared a state of emergency due to the severe weather conditions that are impacting travel and safety. Effective 2 p.m., Niagara County will be upgrading the travel advisory to a full travel ban until further notice."

'Transformative' Niagara Falls projects to attract new visitors & development

The Niagara Falls Heritage Gateways project, which is comprised of five public gateway features intended to stimulate reinvestment in Niagara Falls, will move forward. In addition, New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has approved an agreement authorizing the Aquarium of Niagara to manage operations at the currently closed Niagara Gorge Discovery Center. Construction will now start on transforming the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center into Great Lakes 360 - an "exciting new space for Great Lakes-focused exhibits."

Niagara University Student Nurses Association assists community with holiday drives

The group has been collecting canned goods, blankets, toiletries and personal hygiene products that it will donate to Community Missions of Niagara Frontier Inc. at the end of the semester.
