The Women's Respite Program will mark 25 years of service at a reception Saturday, Aug. 3, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Stella Niagara in Lewiston. The Respite Program, a nonprofit organization, provides time away to rest and renew for single mothers with low incomes, grandmothers raising their grandchildren, and women with cancer.

The fifth annual Jonathon Cote Memorial Motorcycle Ride and Fundraiser takes place Sunday, Aug. 4, with sign-ups starting at 11 a.m. at Williamsville North High School, Dodge Road in Amherst. The ride honors Cote, a U.S. Army veteran who lost his life while working as a private security contractor in Iraq in 2006.

Returning this year, with intent to surpass the ample success of last year's event, the Relay For Life festival of Lewiston/Niagara will take place at a new location, Reservoir State Park, on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3-4, from 1 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Ms. MWI International - "The Premiere Pageant for Women Over 35" - presents its international pageant Aug. 4-9 at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel in downtown Niagara Falls. As part of the weeklong celebration, contestants will spend time in the Village of Lewiston on Monday. They will make a stop in the business district and pay a special visit to the residents at Our Lady of Peace nursing home.

The fifth annual Jason Raby Memorial 5K Race and one-mile Fun Walk is being held at Lewiston-Porter Senior High School on Saturday, July 27, at 11 a.m. The event will be held in honor of Jason Raby, who graduated from Lewiston-Porter High School in 2001 and suddenly passed away at the young age of 25 while playing basketball at Niagara University in 2008.

Electricity gradually returned Saturday afternoon and evening to the homes of National Grid customers in Niagara County that were dark following Friday's storm.
As of 9:30 p.m., less than 1,000 homes were waiting to receive electricity. Just 12 hours earlier, more than 5,000 homes in Lewiston alone were without power. National Grid reported that, at the storm's peak, about 75,000 customers in upstate New York were left in the dark. About 28,500 customers were in the Western New York region - primarily in Erie and Niagara counties.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, St. Peter's School in Lewiston will host a celebration to commemorate the 60 years of academic excellence and prestige that it has maintained. The event will begin at 4 p.m. at St. Peter's R.C. Church, where a Mass will be held. It will be followed by a reception at the nearby Barton Hill Hotel & Spa.
Food and refreshments will be available, and an evening program will feature a number of festivities. Alumni, former students, parents, faculty, and those who have shared an experience with St. Peter's are welcome to attend.

Recreational funding occupied portions of what was otherwise a low-key Town of Porter Board meeting, earlier this month at Town Hall. While certainly not on the level in the Town of Lewiston, which this week saw its referendum proposal for a multi-million recreation center go down to defeat, the funding discussions did create some waves.
