Congressman Chris Collins recently announced $402,687.59 in federal funding for the Springwater Fire Co., Cambria Volunteer Fire Co., Terry's Corners Fire Co. and the Swormville Fire Co. Each grant was allocated through the Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG), which is designed to help first-responders improve their capability to respond to fires and emergencies of all types.

Village of Lewiston Mayor Anne Welch's artist group met Wednesday morning and discussed adding a mural and perhaps 3-D art to the Lewiston Event Center's exterior. She said she broached the idea to owners Emery Simon and Harold Hibbard, and they were receptive. Hibbard was in attendance at the meeting.

At Thursday's legislative meeting, the Niagara County Legislature accepted a $2.1 million grant that was approved by the Department of Homeland Security to support the county's effort to enhance radio communication within the fire service.

Lewiston-Porter announced the opening of the Gary Raby Sr. Cross Country Course this week on the Creek Road campus. The course was dedicated at a Tuesday afternoon ceremony, with the Raby family present to cut the ribbon and open the 1.7-mile course. The Lew-Port cross country team, now coached by Gary's daughter, Jenn, was joined by alumni, administrators and board members to honor Gary and his vision, and then explore the course.

Village of Lewiston Mayor Anne Welch recently received a check in the amount of $1,000 from Modern Disposal for the inclusive playground. The recreational area will be built in Marilyn Toohey Park, behind the Red Brick Municipal Building.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487's "Circle of Honor" started to be assembled on Wednesday morning. Patrol cars from the Lewiston Police Department and Niagara County Sheriff's Office escorted stone pillars down Center Street and into Academy Park. Project manager Rocco DelGrosso and his team then began to install the monument pieces.

The course of events leading up to this festival led to an enhanced sense of urgency by the many volunteers and participants to make sure this festival was going to be the best it possibly could.
